Tail distribution of the buffer occupancy in a discrete-time queue fed by general on/off sources

چکیده
A statistical multiplexer with a finite number of independent, not necessarily identical, bursty traffic sources is considered in this paper. Each source stochastically alternates between on-periods, during which it generates one cell per slot, and off-periods, during which no cells are generated. The on-periods and the off-periods are assumed to be independent, but are allowed to have general distributions. The discrete-time queueing model we thus obtain is analyzed using a generating-functions approach resulting in an accurate geometric approximation for the tail distribution of the buffer contents based on the use of the dominant pole of its probability generating function. The results of the study are applied to investigate the influence of the nature of the distributions of the on-periods and the off-periods of the traffic sources on the multiplexer performance.

Power Tail Asymptotic Results of a Discrete Time Queue with Long Range Dependent Input
In this paper, we consider a discrete time queueing system fed by a superposition of an ON and OFF source with heavy tail ON periods and geometric OFF periods and a D-BMAP (Discrete Batch Markovian Arrival Process). We study the tail behavior of the queue length distribution and both infinite and finite buffer systems are considered. In the infinite buffer case, we show that the asymptotic tail...

This paper presents a discrete-time single-server finite buffer N threshold policy queue with renewal input and discreteMarkovian service process. The server terminates service whenever the system becomes empty, and recommencesservice as soon as the number of waiting customers in the queue is N. We obtain the system-length distributionsat pre-arrival and arbitrary epochs using the supplementary...
متن کاملLong range dependence in network traffic and the closed loop behaviour of buffers under adaptive window control
We consider an Internet link carrying http-like traffic, i.e., transfers of finite volume files arriving at random time instants. These file transfers are controlled by an adaptive window protocol (AWP); an example of such a protocol is TCP. We provide analysis for the auto-covariance function of the AWP controlled traffic into the link’s buffer; this traffic, in general, cannot be represented ...
متن کاملStationary Analysis of Tandem Fluid Queues Fed by Homogeneous On-off Sources
We consider a fluid system composed of multiple buffers in series. The first buffer receives fluid from a finite superposition of independent identical on-off sources. The active and silent periods of sources are exponentially distributed. The ith buffer releases fluid in the (i + 1)th buffer. Assuming that the input rate of one source is greater than the service rate of the first buffer, the o...
